Ladakh Adventure
Stay: Superior Rooms in Oriental Hotel
Leave after an early breakfast on a stunning drive over the mighty Khardung La (5602 M) into the verdant Nubra Valley. We reach the base of the valley at Khalsar; here the road forks and the broad valley get divided into two distinct parts by the Shyok & Nubra Rivers. We move along the Shyok River and reach Hunder. Check into yurts at a campsite.
Freshen up and leave on a hike on the trail going via the sand dunes to Hunder Dok: this was a part of the original Silk Route, and the trail goes further over Lasermo La to emerge in the Indus Valley near Phyang Gompa. Going to Hunder Dok and back takes about 8 – 9 hrs, you wouldn’t have so much time so you could probably go up about 5 – 6 kms and hike back. You will get great views of the Saser Kangri Peak (7672 M) and also go through some stunningly beautiful terrain. On return to the dunes, you could do a ride on the Bactrian Camels and even hire an ATV!
Stay: Yurts in Nubra Sarai
Leave after breakfast on a wonderfully off-beat drive via the little-explored Agam – Shyok region to reach the grand Pangong Tso. Drive along the lakeshore for about 20 minutes to reach the undisturbed & serene area around Man village and check into a homestay. Enjoy spectacular views of the mountains of the Changchenmo range to the north, their reflection shimmering in the ever-changing blues and greens of the lake brackish water and a glorious sunset view. Stroll along the lake and you could also hike up the rolling mountainside for some panoramic photo ops.
Stay: Rooms in Pangong House
Please note: Pangong House is a lovely homestay. It has well-appointed rooms with en suite facilities and a heated traditional dining area. Over the years we have sent several guests here and they have loved it. We also know the owner – Norboo, very well so I can assure you of a great stay experience.
Enjoy a spectacular sunrise by the lakeshore. Post breakfast head back to Leh Over the conventional route via Chang La. Reach your hotel in Leh by afternoon. Freshen up, relax a while and then head to the vibrant Leh bazaar and also check out the Palace. Later visit Shanti Stupa for fantastic views of Leh Valley & Town at sunset – suggest that, rather than driving to the top you hike up the stairway (400 steps) and enjoy epic views all along!
Stay: Superior Rooms in Oriental Hotel
After breakfast, you will hire Motorcycles from Leh and ride through the itinerary for the rest of the day: first visit Shey, Thiksey and Hemis; then head to Stok Village to have a traditional Ladakh meal in a two century old heritage home and also see the Stok Palace & Museum. Be back in your hotel by late afternoon and after freshening up head on a fantastic stretch of tarmac along the Indus – the Srinagar Highway to see the Hall of Fame (Army Museum), Magnetic Point (where vehicles seemingly defy gravity), Patthar Sahib and Nimmu (confluence of Indus & Zanskar Rivers). Once back in Leh return the bikes.
